Silent Movie
Objective:
Students will explore drama by creating an artistic interpretation that connects
self and/ or society to the selection (SCS 1.02.) Students will create a
"silent movie" of a text
Materials Needed:
Any selection of literature (such as drama, poetry, short story, etc.)
Large white construction paper and Markers
Focus and Review:
Teacher will review the literature from the previous day. Teacher will introduce
the process of "silent movie" to the class. In initial "silent
movie" lesson, teacher will prepare text with breaks to ease into the
process.
Instructional Strategy:
Students will be arranged in two groups of ten. Each group will be responsible
for creating their own "silent movie" from the text provided. Students
will examine the text in each break, or section, and create one image that
captures the essence of that section. They will also choose one line of text to
be the heading for that section, which will be written on white construction
paper. Process continues through each section. Once all sections have been
created into images with line of text, students will practice putting the
sections together. One image will change into the next as the line of text
chosen is shown to the audience. This pattern continues through each section.
Final product is a "silent movie" to be presented in front of
classmates.
Concluding Activity:
Each group will present their "silent movie" to their classmates.
Journaling will take place in a response form: students will write what they
thought of the activity and how it makes difficult texts easier to understand.
